Get Comfortable With Being Uncomfortable

A friend once said to me, “Get comfortable with being uncomfortable.” I had been training for my Yellow Belt test: taking multiple classes several times a week, meeting people in my spare time to work on technique, and running in the mornings to build my endurance.  I was exhausted! On one of my morning runs, I just… stopped running. I stopped moving my feet and just stood there. I was over it. I looked around, took my earbuds out and said, “this is stupid, I’m done.”

Active Shooter Seminar - A Student's Experience

As a student I grew up doing lockdown drills in school - lock the door, sit quietly, wait for it to be over. I was somewhat oblivious to the reality of why we needed such a drill in the first place. Now, as a high school teacher, I look around at my students huddled in the back of my classroom during a lockdown drill and realize they are keenly aware of why such drills are necessary.
